The workshop was small, its eight man workforce and single kiln woefully inadequate to cope with overwhelming demand. But it was the only place to go for every imaginable earthenware product from tea cups to electrical sockets... The year was 1942, international trade was at a standstill in the war-torn world, and the Dr. Nejat Eczac?ba?? Ceramic Factory had just been launched to a running start in Kartal, ?stanbul, to alleviate some of the shortages choking the import starved country. Post-war, once trade picked up again, the fast growing company was led by clear consumer demand to focus on its most up-and-coming line of production - ceramic sanitaryware. A novelty in the marble dominated traditional Turkish market, the versatile and affordable ceramic option was an instant hit. A second production plant came on line in 1958 in response to surging demand. The brand name VitrA was adopted in 1966, and it gradually grew to represent a full range of sanitary products from a series of sister companies under the Eczac?ba?? Group. The first factory, of what would later grow into the Bozüyük mega complex, began production in 1977; the fittings plant in 1979, and tiles factory in 1991. The 1991 initiation of bathtubs plant was followed by bathroom furniture in 1992. The first export shipment was made to Germany in the early 80s, after which VitrA quickly established itself as a global brand. And in 1999, the company's first manufacturing investment abroad was launched in Ireland to better serve the foreign market. Another space, more intimate, more relaxed and soothing than anywhere else... A recess for tending the spirit and pampering the body... A vibrant, adaptable, fluid room where flowing water is part of the furniture... The bathroom, long relegated to the insipid realm of humdrum functionality, is making a glorious comeback to reclaim a central place in our lives. Inspired by the sociable, luxurious Turkish hammam culture, a VitrA bathroom is a living space where the contemporary individual can rest, read, spend luxuriant time on personal care, or sit down with family or friends for a cozy chat. Practical, comfortable and stylistic all at the same time, it is the core of the indoor environment. Taking its cue from the millenia-old Anatolian tradition of ceramic art, VitrA combines superior aesthetic concepts with sophisticated technology to redefine our relationship with water, and to reinvent the bathroom.
